Can you help our Future Leaders?

True North has an annual $10k fundraising target for its programming as part of its KPI’s to funding bodies and also to remain viable and we need your help! The Quiz and Bingo night is at 6pm on June 2nd, so bring your friends and family along for a great night out. Tables are 8 people. Tickets are $10, with a $1 cost for bingo rounds during the night. The event is being held at the Hillcrest community centre. Please RSVP here and we hope to see you there!

If you can’t make it to this event you might like to also support True North through the Australian cultural fund which will match fund dollar for dollar for anything donated to our project which means your $1 will turn into $2 dollars if you help us by donating to our ensemble. We only get the money if we reach our target so if you can’t make it we would really appreciate your support through this channel.

Donations can be made by the following link.

True North Youth Theatre Ensemble is a youth theatre ensemble that engages youth people aged 8-23 in marginalised areas of Adelaide. It is led by award winning Artistic Director Alirio Zavarce. At True North, we teach theatre skills by making theatre. Under the magical direction of Alirio, all groups have performance outcomes each year along with other opportunities for the presentation of new work.

The groundbreaking True North Pathways Program is our newest initiative and the leaders will be hosting this event. This program develops leadership skills in young adults aged 17-23, mentoring young people into becoming community leaders and involving them in the running of the program.

Ebully Reviews

Ebully Premier Review

In May 2017 we had the World Premiere of EBully at the DreamBig Children’s Festival. We had amazing responses from schools, families and audience members. We would love to take this work across Australia and encourage other people to be part of the solution.

Alirio Zavarce and True North Youth Theatre Ensemble’s E Bully is a direct response to cyber-bullying

E Bully

The Parks Theatre

until May 27

ONE of the more insidious forms of harassment in our society, cyber-bullying, has rightly stirred the powers-that-be into belated action in a country where this particular scourge is endemic.

Alirio Zavarce and his True North Youth Theatre Ensemble have developed E Bully as a direct response to lived experience, and are to be roundly commended for the honesty and integrity they’ve brought to the project.

Theatre as a vehicle for social change is hardly a new concept, but what this group does is truly

impressive, inasmuch as they engage the audience while delivering theatre of a really high standard, delivering their vital message in such a way as to encourage the audience to confront vile, cruel behaviour when they see it.

If the words of E Bully ring true, it’s because they are. The fourteen members of the ensemble have each given of their own to the production, which Zavarce and his collaborators have skilfully interleaved with a representative story about a teenager who’s trolled at school, and an natty chat room in which the audience — your writer included — were offering their own baubles and barbs, a stark demonstration of the power of anonymity.

Each show concludes with a Q&A, which is absolutely obligatory. The message comes through loud and clear. E Bullying is not just wrong, it’s a crime, and its perpetrators must be called out whenever they rear their heads. Bravo to these courageous young folk, and good luck.

True North Marion

A new and exciting opportunity is emerging in the City of Marion

We are extremely happy to announce that True North is coming to Marion.   Commencing in Term 4 2017 True North Marion will emerge.

AJZ Productions has recently been supported by the City of Marion to start a new exciting chapter:  “True North Marion” 20 scholarships valued at $800 each will be offered to young people aged 13 to 17 residing in the City of Marion to attend weekly workshops at the Marion Cultural Centre.

An open Workshop/Auditions will be conducted on Monday 9th of October from 2pm to 4pm at The Marion Cultural Centre and workshops will begin in term 4, 2017.   True North Marion will provide Youth interested in the arts a free, social, collaborative and safe place in which they will be able to express themselves to teach performance skills and practices.  It aims to break down cultural barriers, promotes self-esteem, confidence and provide high level tuition.  The Ensemble will be led by Artistic Director Alirio Zavarce an award-winning theatre maker and performer and a team of arts professionals.
The pilot project will be ‘A Sense of Home’ – finding the voice of the youth in the ensemble.   Through a series of workshops participants will explore who they are, where they live, what they do and what is their cultural background.  What are the links that bring us together within the local area and explore the issues for the individual and the community.  The aim is to learn by creating to give participants skills, obtain a sense of bonding, and find the strengths, identity and pride in the place where we live.

“The opportunity to engage and expand our program for young people in the city of Marion is literally a dream come true for True North – we are so excited by this new chapter in our journey as a cutting-edge youth theatre organisation”

Adelaide Theatre

Adelaide Theatre

Adelaide Theatre group from northern suburbs called True North Youth Theatre Ensemble fly to Ontario in Canada next month to represent Australia in the World Festival of Theatre for Children, performing their wholly original work, A Kid like Me. For many it will be the first time they will have left the State, for others the first time they’ve left the country, but for them all it’s set to be a journey of a lifetime. Everyone at True North Youth Theatre has been working incredibly hard organising and running fundraising events and through our Pozible Campaign in order to make this trip possible. Without the Dedication and support from all the families and friends this would never have been possible. From all of us at True North Youth Theatre Ensemble.
